TRI-COUNTY COMIC CON 2007 Report
Posted 1/16/08

The Tri-County Comic Con was a last minute signup for us. We were invited during the November Collectibles Show by producers Marcus and Lorretta, who have become good friends. I was a featured artist for this event, even though the real celebrities got top billing (I'm looking at you, Walter Koenig!) it was still awesome to end the year with a guest spot at a 3-day event.

I have to say that I had much higher expectations for the show, as did all the vendors and celebrities. There were a number of rumors floating around about why crowds were so small... but rather than speculate about something I can't prove or do anything about, I'll tell you the good things that happened!

Hey, that guy looks awfully familiar!

Because we were located near the celebrity area, we got to hang out with some of them during the downtime. They were all so friendly and down to earth. It was funny watching Walter Koenig dance with I Spy's Debi Storm and listening to Jeff Breslauer as the Joker cackling on the karaoke machine.

The vendors, some of whom we'd met at previous shows, were great to deal with. I spent too much money, which is a drawback of shows with poor attendence -- you spend a lot of time browsing and end up buying way more than you intended! Still, it was fun to shop and see things you didn't know were available.

Some awesome artists we met, Erik Jones, Kyle and Nick.

We also met some artists from Sarasota and Gainesville. Erik Jones (www.theirison.com), and Kyle Cross and Nick (www.gorillariot.com). For those that saw the naughty illustration of Spongebob in the fan art gallery, you can thank Erik for the inspiration behind that. The best thing to come out of the show was being invited to participate in an art exhibit in Sarasota by Kyle, who runs a graphic design business with a gallery component. That show will be in early January of 2008. Stay tuned for more info!

Oh, an interesting change in sales to report... the most popular pieces at the show were the newest portraits I finished just days before the event of the Jonas Brothers. Who knew? *shrug*

Again, the crowd attendance was poor, but the show was fun. And we still appreciated the hard work by Lorretta and Marcus, and we can't wait for the next show in the Spring. See you all in 2008!!
